FRIDAY~
Anne and I left the house about 10:45 [P.M.] in Burke's car--Burke driving. (Everything left in good shape at Next Day Hill. Important items packed and locked. All arrangements completed.) Drove to corner of Forty-sixth and one block east of West Street, where we met Mr. Von Glahn and an officer of the North German Lloyd. They got in our car, and we drove in the freight entrance and boarded the Bremen without difficulty (via crew's gangplank). Were taken to a room in the crew's quarters where we were to wait until ship sailed before going to our own stateroom. After about fifteen minutes an officer came to tell us that the press had learned we were on board and were looking all over the ship for us.
Left dock about 12:30. An officer knocked on our door and said everyone had gone ashore. He escorted us to our room. A very well-designed stateroom. I like the appearance of this ship.
Can now really think about seeing Jon and Land again.

Papers carry reports of German invasion of Austria. Headlines: GERMAN TROOPS ENTER AUSTRIA. Stories too mixed to permit any accurate conclusions. Hope England and Germany can find some way of working together. If they could do so, there need be no major war in Europe for many years to come. If they fight again, it will be chaos.

Late breakfast in dining room with Anne. Walk on sun deck afterward; no sun and no one else on the deck. Always easy to be alone in bad weather. This is a beautifully designed boat, and well run.
Morning spent making pencil drawing of oil flask--only piece of work I have not finished for book (The oil flask was a portion of the organ-perfusion apparatus Lindbergh had designed and constructed for Dr. Alexis Carrel at the latter's Department of Experimental Surgery in the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York City. This was the first apparatus in which living organs could be perfused without the entrance of infection.) Must send it back to publishers as soon as we land in England. Afternoon spent drawing. Also walk on top deck with Anne. Sea smooth and ship steady.
